WASHINGTON, D.C.Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, released the following statement today on the death of Ambassador Dan Rooney:

It was with deep sadness that I learned this evening of the death of Ambassador Daniel (“Dan”) Rooney. Dan was a champion for his family, his community, his team, and his faith. I have known Dan for more than fifty years from the time I was a priest in Pittsburgh. We had many opportunities to work together over the years while I served there as bishop. Dan, like his father identified with his Steelers and his players identified with him.

Over our many years of association, I appreciated Dan’s strong faith and how it influenced his commitment to and love for Pittsburgh, the role his Steelers played in the community, and his devotion to our country which he served so capably as ambassador to Ireland. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Patricia, their children, and all of the Rooney family that God grant Dan eternal rest.
